Odds on Austria to win Euro 2024

What are the odds for Austria to make the Euro 2024 quarter-finals?

The European Championships are just around the corner and Austria will be hoping to fight their way through the knockouts. But what are the odds for Austria to make the quarter-finals of Euro 2024?

The Austria men’s football team was founded in 1904 and qualified for their first major tournament 30 years later when they appeared at the 1934 World Cup. Austria have qualified for seven World Cups in their history, with the most successful of those coming in 1954 when they finished third in Italy.

Austria didn’t play at the European Championships until 2008 when they were handed automatic qualification as co-hosts with Switzerland. Fortunately, the national side has gone on to qualify for three more Euros tournaments since then, reaching the Round of 16 in 2020 as their best finish. While the Austrians have never reached a Euros quarter-final, they have odds of 3.50 to make history and do just that this summer in Germany. What are the chances for Austria to win Euro 2024?

Austria have been placed into Group D for Euro 24 alongside the Netherlands, France, and Poland. That’s just about as hard a group as the Austrians could have possibly got. France are one of the favourites to win the entire tournament, the Dutch are definite dark horses, and Poland have the strike force of Robert Lewandowski on their side. However, Austria are still ranked as the 25th-best team in the world right now, so they are certainly no pushovers. If Austria can get a result or two from their group-stage games, they may stand a chance of making the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed finishers.

On paper, Austria are one of the favourites to finish bottom of Group D, but the form guide tells a completely different story. The Austrians actually come into Euro 2024 in sensational form over the past year, including wins over big European teams. The most notable result came in November 2023 when they beat Germany 2-0, but they are currently on a five-game winning streak which includes victories over Azerbaijan, Estonia, Slovakia and Turkey too. During European Championship qualifying, Austria also went toe-to-toe with Belgium and narrowly lost 3-2 to the third-best team in the world.

The biggest problem that Austria face heading into the Euros this summer is the absence of their biggest star, David Alaba. The Real Madrid defender tore his ACL this season and is unlikely to return in time for the tournament in Germany. However, Konrad Laimer is more than capable of stepping up and leading the Austrian team in Alaba’s absence, with the Bayern Munich midfielder being used to playing on the biggest stages. Other notable Austrian stars include Borussia Dortmund’s Marcel Sabtizer and RB Leipzig trio, Xaver Schlagger, Christoph Baumgartner, and Nicolas Seiwald.

Austria currently have odds of 1.90 to qualify from Group D, 3.50 to make the quarter-finals, 9.00 to reach the semi-finals and 80.00 to go all the way and win Euro 2024 outright.
