At Betsson.com you can bet on a vast array of horse and greyhound races from all over the world.

Separate from the distinction of horse and greyhound racing we can further break down the main types of horse racing into two different categories: Gallop Racing and Trotting.

Gallop

Gallop racing is broken down into two separate race types, flat and jump racing.
Flat racing is typically over a shorter distance than jump racing and the horses will not have to overcome any obstacles.

Jump racing in the UK has a wide variety of race types such as national hunt, hurdles, chases and steeplechases. The runners will have to overcome a number of obstacles, which will either be hurdles or fences.

A race over fences will be known as a chase, or steeplechase.

Trotting

Trotting races are entirely different. The person that is controlling the horse is called the driver as in most of the races they do not sit on the horse's back. Instead, they are pulled-along in a two-wheeled cart which is known as a sulky. Only in very few Trot races, so called monte races, the horse is ridden by a jockey.

The horse is required to travel at a specific gait. Any runner that breaks into a full gallop will be disqualified from the race. Trotting races are slower than Gallop fixtures. Track-position is key and the races are very tactical.

A major difference between horse betting compared to sports betting are the different kinds of odds available. While sports betting usually allows you to place a fixed-odds bet, in horse and greyhound betting there are different kind of odds offered depending on the event country and race type.

Fixed-Odds

Fixed-odds are prices being offered by Betsson. on selected races and for special bets. Once the bet has been accepted, you are guaranteed to get that price - even if the odds offered shorten after the bet has been made. Rule 4 deductions can still take place, if any horses are subsequently declared to be non-runners.

Starting Prices

For fixtures taking place in the UK, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates the Starting Price (SP) represents the odds prevailing on a horse in the on-course fixed-odds betting market at the time a race begins. When you make a SP bet, you will not know the odds you are getting. The odds will not be known until the fixture is underway. Any odds that are shown in the SP column, on our race cards, are only a guide to the likely SP based on the current market.

We may refer to Starting Prices in races run in other countries than the one's mentioned above. In such cases the Tote Odds are deemed to be the SP.

Tote Odds

Tote betting refers to wagers that are forwarded by Betsson into a Totalisator pool, also known as Parimutuel Betting. It is a betting system in which all bets of a particular type are placed together in a pool; when the pool is closed taxes and the "house-take" are removed and the payoff odds are calculated by sharing the pool among all winning bets.

Similarly, to SP betting, you will not know the odds you are getting when placing a Tote bet. The odds will not be known until the fixture is underway. Any odds that are shown in the Tote column, on our race cards, are only a guide to the likely Tote odds based on the current market.

Ante Post

Ante-Post prices are offered prior to the race becoming classed as ‘Day-of-Race’. Ante Post markets are offered up to and including the day prior to the event. If, during the course of any Ante Post Entry/Forfeit or Declaration stage, odds are incorrectly left up on the website, these bets will be void.

Non-Runner No Bet (NRNB) markets are clearly marked as such when the stake will be refunded if your selection does not participate.

If your bet was placed on an Ante-post market when NRNB was not applied and your selection does not participate, this is settled as a losing bet.

Early Prices

Early Price markets are offered on most if not all UK, Irish, German, French and South African markets and is the term used for when fixed odds are available. For UK and Irish markets, the term 'Early Prices' can also be used to describe the odds before the show or board prices become available.

Day-of-Race

Day-of-Race markets are those offered at the time at which overnight declarations have been made. If there are any withdrawals, then Rule 4 will also apply.

Head-to-Head

Head-to-Head bets may be offered on certain races, with markets available for match-ups chosen by us. Fixed-odds will be on offer for either horse to finish the race ahead of the other one.

We will always try to match runners that we feel have a similar chance of winning the race. However, it is important to remember that your horse does not need to win the race for you to win your bet. Your horse only has to finish in front of the horse that it is matched with in the head-to-head market.

Should none of these runners finish the race or any of these runners become a non-runner, all bets on the according Head-to-Head market shall be voided and the stake money refunded.

Special Bets

We offer a number of Special Bets with fixed-odds and the rules of these markets may vary. For example, we might pose the question ‘Who will be the Top National Hunt Trainer in the forthcoming National Hunt season?’. We clearly define how the outcome will be reached and your bet would be based on our definition. We might choose ‘Total Prize-Money Won’, ‘Number of Races Won’, or something similar.

3.1 Markets: Favourites Index

Favourites Index markets relate to the aggregate performance of Favourites over the course of a meeting, while a Favourite is defined as the runner of a race with the lowest Starting Price. In the case of two or more joint Favourites, the runner with the lowest program number will be deemed Favourite. In the event of no SP being returned for an event, the Favourite will be determined basing on the prices published in the Racing Post prior to the race.

The following points are awarded if a Favourite is placed on one of the first three places:

The official race results shall prevail.

In the event of a Dead Heat, the points awarded are determined by dividing the total points of the affected places by the number of affected places.

If the meeting has three or more races abandoned or declared void, all bets will be void unless a winning market has already been established, in which case all bets stand. When only one or two races are abandoned or declared void, bets will be settled with 10 points being applied for each abandoned or void race. In the event of a walkover, bets will be settled with 10 points being applied to that race.

If the Favourite is withdrawn at the start of the race and no new market is formed, points will be awarded depending on the odds of the Favourite at the time of withdrawal:

3.2 Markets: Number of Wins

For cases other than Trainer Champion and Jockey Champion markets, where the number of wins of a trainer or jockey ('Participant') matters, it is irrelevant whether the chosen Participant contests in fewer races relative to those known upon bet placement (i.e., non-runner, injury). Should the Participant fail to start in any race, the stakes shall be refunded. The same applies in case of cancellation of all the races.

Should the Participant have more starts/runners than known upon bet placement (e.g., replacement of another jockey), these additional starts shall not count and be treated as if he had not participated in such races.

3.3 Markets: Trainer Champion/Jockey Champion

If not stated elsewise in such market you are betting on the number of wins of a trainer/jockey in all flat races of a meeting ('Meeting Championship') or within one calendar year ('Annual Championship').

In case of a tie, the number of second places and, in case of a further tie, the number of third places shall be used. If not distinct result can be determined following these rules, the Dead Heat rules for fixed odds bets shall apply.

At the 'Annual Championship', only domestic races of the Category A shall be considered.

The official race results shall prevail. Should a trainer/jockey have no runners/starts for any reason, the bets placed on such selection will be lost and no stakes will be refunded.

3.4 Markets: Winning Distances

Winning Distances markets relate to the total winning margins (distance between first and second placed runners) of each race at a particular meeting. For races won by less than half a length, the following is awarded:

The maximum winning distance awarded for a National Hunt race is 30 lengths (including National Hunt Flat races). The maximum winning distance awarded for a flat race is 12 lengths. In the event of a walkover, the 5 lengths will be awarded for a Flat race and 12 lengths for a National Hunt race.

If a meeting has one or two races abandoned or declared void, then bets will be settled with a default distance used for each abandoned or void race: 2 lengths for a Flat race and 10 lengths for a National Hunt race. If more than two races are abandoned or void, then all bets will be void, unless a winning market has already been established.

Any runner subsequently disqualified for taking the wrong course or carrying an incorrect weight will be ignored when the winning distance is calculated. The winning distance in such a race will be settled on the officially declared distance between the first two horses past the post that have followed the correct course and carried the correct weight.

This only includes races on the regular card, it does not include charity races or any other race not run under the Rules of Racing.

When placing a bet with Betsson you can choose if you want to place your bet as Fixed-Odds, Starting Price or Tote Bet. Depending on the bet you are placing either all, two or only one of these options might be available. There are major differences between these three categories and we display them for you in the following overview:

4.1 Bet Categories: Fixed-Odds Betting

When you make a fixed-odds bet, you are making a wager at a fixed price that is being offered by us. Once the bet has been accepted, you are guaranteed to get that price - even if the odds offered shorten after the bet has been made.

Fixed-odds bets are offered on selected races only. Rule 4 deductions can still take place, if any of the horses are subsequently declared to be non-runners.

Each Way Terms

The standard Each Way Terms apply and are determined by the number of actual starters, and not by the number of the declared runners when the price is laid. For ante-post bets special place terms might apply when stated at the time of placing the bet.

Non-Runners

Should a runner become a non-runner, run "without bets", or is not eligible to run, all bets on such selection shall be deemed lost unless it is stated in the market that the Rule 4 applies.

Should a horse be withdrawn without coming under starters orders in an fixed-odds market where it is stated that the Rule 4 applies, stakes on that selection will be returned, with bets on other runners in the race being subject to a deduction in accordance with Tattersalls' Rule 4, based on the price of the non-runner at the time it is withdrawn. However, if the market has been re-formed because of an earlier non-runner, then the deduction for bets placed in the original market will be based on the latest fixed-odds offered for the non-runner in that market. If the Rule 4 is applied in markets where the withdrawal time of non-runners is not announced, the last published fixed-odds of the non-runner are used as base for the deduction.

Abandoned Races

For abandoned races, bets shall remain valid if the race was postponed and rescheduled within 48 hours (ante-post bets: 14 days) on the same track and the entries have not been re-opened. Otherwise, the bets shall be voided and the stake money refunded.

If no totalisator betting is offered or all tote bets are voided for technical reasons, fixed-odds bets shall retain their validity, provided that an official race result is determined.

Re-run Races

If the Rule 4 applies, in the event of a false start etc. resulting in a race being re-run, 'under orders' is negated and stakes will be refunded on horses taking no part in the re-run, with returns on the remaining runners subject to Tattersalls' Rule 4. Place terms are governed by the number of runners taking part in the re-run.

Change of conditions

If the general conditions for a race such as the racetrack, surface, or distance be changed by the operator, Betsson shall be entitled to void any fixed-odds bets before the start of the race and refund the stake money.

Dead Heat

In a Dead Heat, the stake money on a selection is divided by the number of runners involved in the Dead Heat. The full odds are then paid to the divided stake with the remainder of the stake money being lost.

Walkover

In the event of a walkover, a race involving only one runner, all fixed-odds bets shall be voided and the stake money refunded.

4.2 Bet Categories: Industry SP

Industry Starting Price betting refers to bets other than fixed-odds bets held by us at our own risk. Characteristic for SP bets is further that you will not know the odds you are getting in the moment you are placing such bet. They will not be known until the race is underway. Any odds other than fixed-odds that are shown on our race cards, are only a guide to the likely odds based on the current market.

UK, Ireland and United Arab Emirates

For fixtures taking place in the UK, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates the Starting Price (SP) represents the odds prevailing on a horse in the on-course fixed-odds betting market at the time a race begins. Betsson is basing its payouts for these countries on the Starting Prices determined by the Satellite Information Services Ltd. (SIS) in the UK. If no SP is returned settlement of bets will be based on the final betting shows transmitted by SIS. Where no betting shows are transmitted bets will be settled at Tote odds.
Where a horse is withdrawn before coming under starter's orders, or is officially deemed by the starter to have taken no part in the race, and no new SP market has been formed, stakes will be returned on the withdrawn horse and winning bets will be subject to deductions in accordance with Tattersalls' Rule 4.

All other Countries

In all other countries, we will settle starting price bets on the final dividends published by the Totalisator. However, this does not mean that the money from your bet will be added to the Tote Pool. Your bet is made with Betsson and any winnings are paid directly from us.

Please be aware that Betsson might offer bookmaker betting for the same race basing on two or more Totalisators. This is for example the case for selected races run in Germany that are offered on the base of the Totalisator operated by the respective host track but also on the basis of a Totalisator operated by the French PMU. As mentioned above we will clearly state in the race card if a bookmaker market is based on any other Totalisator than the one defined in the list above.

4.3 Bet Categories: Tote Betting

Tote betting refers to wagers that are forwarded by Betsson into a Totalisator pool, also known as Parimutuel Betting. It is a betting system in which all bets of a particular type are placed together in a pool; when the pool is closed taxes and the "house-take" are removed and the payoff odds are calculated by sharing the pool among all winning bets.

Similarly, to SP betting, you will not know the odds you are getting when placing a Tote bet. The odds will not be known until the fixture is underway. Any odds that are shown in the Tote column, on our race cards, are only a guide to the likely Tote odds based on the current market.

While Betsson usually refers to the Tote Pool operated by the track hosting the race, on some occasions different Tote Pools might be operated for the same race. The following list shows the Tote Pools in that you can place your bets via Betsson:

5.1 Bet Types: Win Bet

Rules

The simplest and most popular bet. When you make a win bet, you are betting on your selection to win the race. Your bet will only be successful if your selection finishes first.


5.2 Bet Types: Place Bet

Rules

Your bet will simply be on the horse to place and the payout will be unaffected if your horse wins the race.
Betsson follow the rules of the Tote for any SP Place bets that are accepted. In the UK, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates, only Each Way bets will be accepted.

A Tote place bet falls under the regulations of the Tote itself. In general, 2-4 horses will count as being placed, even if the Totalisator might pay on more than 4 places in certain cases. The number of places paid depends on the number of runners that start the race and can be found in the following table:

Special rule for North and South America
If you make a place bet on the Totalisator for races in North and South America, only the first two finishers will count as being placed. Show bets, on such Totes, pay-out on the first three finishers. When we allow bookmaker place bets to be made, on races at tracks where both place and show betting is offered by the local Totalisator (i.e. races in North and South America), we will pay-out winning place bets based upon the rules and dividends for show bets at the track in question.


5.3 Bet Types: Show Bet

Rules

Show bets are only offered in Totalisators in North and South America. They follow the rules of the place bet with the difference being that they pay-out on the first three finishers.

Rules

5.5 Bet Types: Each-Way Bet

Rules

When you make an each-way bet, you are making two separate wagers. The stakes will be exactly the same for each of the two bets.

One bet is a standard win bet, while the other is a place bet following the each-way terms below. The number of horses that will be deemed to have placed depends on the number of horses that start the race. The place dividend is worked-out by applying a fractional calculation to the win odds.

If your horse wins the race, then both the win bet and the place bet will be successful. If the horse does not win, but is placed, then just the place bet will be a winner.

Each-way bets can be made at fixed-odds or at SP (when available). For SP betting the current each-way terms are displayed at the top of the race card. They are however subject to change in case of non-runners as they are depending on the number of runners that are actually starting in a race.

For fixed-odds bets the each-way terms are displayed in the according betting dialog. While they are fixed for ante-post bets for all other fixed-odds bets they are subject to change in case of non-runners as they are depending on the number of runners that are actually starting in a race.

The ita bet is very similar to a win bet. The only difference is that you are backing the runner to finish specifically in second place. Your bet will be unsuccessful if the horse wins, or finishes in any position other than second.
The ita odds are determined by multiplying the place odds of the second finisher by 2, if two places are paid, or 2.5, if three or more places are paid in such race. If no place odds are provided by the Totalisator, 1.00 shall be deemed to be the place odds of the second finisher for the purpose of this calculation. The resulting ita odds shall be at most the forecast odds of such race.

All ita bets are lost should less than two runners finish the race.


5.7 Bet Types: Trita Bet

Rules

The trita bet is very similar to a win bet. The only difference is that you are backing the runner to finish specifically in third place. Your bet will be unsuccessful if the horse wins, or finishes in any position other than third.
The trita odds are determined by multiplying the place odds of the third finisher by 2.5. If no place odds are provided by the Totalisator, 1.00 shall be deemed to be the place odds of the third finisher for the purpose of this calculation. The resulting trita odds shall be at most the tricast odds of such race.

All trita bets are lost should less than three runners finish the race.


5.8 Bet Types: Forecast Bet

Rules

For a forecast bet to be successful, you must correctly predict the runners that occupy the first two finishing positions in the correct order.

If less than two runners finish a race, all forecast bets shall be lost, unless the Totalisator determined exacta odds.

Starting Price Markets

In markets with Starting Prices forecast bets are settled as straight forecasts in accordance with the SP forecast returns. Where an Industry SP is returned this will take precedence over any other declared SP and the forecast dividend will be calculated on this SP. Where no SP is returned the forecast dividend will be based on the final show of betting broadcast by SIS. Where no betting shows are broadcast forecast bets will be settled at Tote odds.

Forecasts are accepted in horse races of 3 or more runners. Forecasts inadvertently accepted in races with only 2 runners will be voided and the stake money refunded.

In races where a runner finishes alone, all forecast bets nominating that horse to finish 1st will be settled as a win bet at starting price. All other forecast bets in the race are lost.

Should no runner cross the finishing line all forecast bets shall be voided and the stake money refunded.


5.9 Bet Types: Quinella Bet

For a quinella bet to be successful, you must correctly predict the runners that occupy the first two finishing positions. You do not need to predict the correct order in which they will finish.

This makes quinella bets somewhat similar to reverse forecast bets. However, the quinella bet involves just one single wager and has its own odds determined by the Totalisator. Betsson will only offer quinella betting when it is also available on the Tote.

If less than two runners finish a race, all quinella bets shall be lost, unless the Totalisator determined quinella odds.

For a tricast bet to be successful, you must correctly predict the runners that occupy the first three finishing positions in the correct order.

If less than three runners finish a race, all tricast bets shall be lost, unless the Totalisator determined trifecta odds.

Starting Price Markets

In markets with Starting Prices, tricast odds are published via SIS System. The tricast odds shall be determined using the following formula:
SP1 x (1 : (((1 : SP2) : (0,1 - 1 : SP1)) x ((1 : SP3) : (0,11 - 1 : SP1 - 1 : SP2)))) / 10

Whereas:
• SP1, SP2 and SP3 are the decimal representations of the SPs, respectively last show price if no SP is announced, of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd finisher multiplied by 10;
• SP2 and SP3 have a maximum value of 150 in races with less than 7 runners, 250 in races with 7 to 9 runners, 350 in races with 10 to 12 runners or 500 in races with more than 12 runners; and
• Should less than 10 horses run in a given race, the resulting odds are limited by the x-multiple of the forecast odds, where x is the number of runners in that race.

Should a race start with less than 6 runners, all tricast bets shall be refunded provided that no tricast dividends are published in the SIS system.

In case of a dead heat, tricast odds are calculated with the corresponding SPs for the various finishers.
In races where only two horses finish, all tricast bets nominating those horses to finish 1st and 2nd in that order will be settled as forecast bets. In races where a horse finishes alone, all tricast bets nominating that horse to finish 1st will be settled as a win single at starting price. All other tricast bets in those race are lost.
Should no runner cross the finishing line all tricast bets shall be refunded.

Odds

Generally, the tricast odds used for the payout of bookmaker bets are the odds provided by the Totalisator or the respective reserve odds if the Totalisator did not determine such odds. However, the following special rules apply.

PMU markets

Tricast odds for races in France or in other markets being settled on the basis of the PMU Tote are calculated on the basis of the win and place odds of such race, if the Totalisator does not provide 'trio ordre' odds:
Tricast odds = Win odds x 2nd Place odds x 3rd Place odds / 15 x 100
Should the Tote not determine win odds, win odds of 1.00 shall be assumed for the purpose of such calculation. Should the Tote not determine any place odds for one or more of the places, odds of 1.00 shall be assumed for such places for the purpose of such calculation.

Should a coupled runner win and the win odds are less than the first Place odds, the first place odds times 2.5 shall be used instead of the Win odds. Should the resulting tricast odds be lower than the trio odds, then the trio odds shall be multiplied by 1.1 to determine the tricast odds.

If the trio odds are 15.00 or less, the resulting tricast odds shall be at most 7 times the trio odds.

Races in Nordic Countries

Tricast odds for races in Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden) are being calculated on the basis of the win and place odds of such race, if the Totalisator does not provide such odds:
Tricast odds = Win odds x 2nd Place odds x 3rd Place odds / 15 x 100
The resulting tricast odds shall be at most the reserve odds. Should the Totalisator not determine win or place odds, the reserve odds shall apply.


5.11 Bet Types: Trio Bet

Odds

Generally, the trio odds used for the payout of bookmaker bets are the odds provided by the Totalisator. If there is no winning trio bet at the Totalisator, Betsson shall calculate the trio odds as follows:
The replacement odds calculation is based on the three place odds. The sum of the winnings part of the three place odds (odds minus 1) results in a base number that is multiplied by X. Trio odds are then obtained by adding 1 to the product. X is dependent on the base number:
2.59 or less: X = 6
2.60 to 4.09: X = 7
4.10 to 5.09: X = 8
5.10 to 6.09: X = 15
6.10 to 7.09: X = 18
7.10 to 8.09: X = 21
8.10 to 9.09: X = 24
...

The calculated odds shall be at most the reserve odds or the tricast odds in such race, whichever is lower. Should the Totalisator not determine all three place odds or determine place odds of 1.00 for one or more of the places, odds of 1.10 shall be assumed for such places for the purpose of this calculation.
Regardless of any special rules at the Totalisator (e.g. payout on the first two runners), all other trio bets shall be lost.

Example
Place odds 1.40, 1.20, and 1.60
Base number = 0.4 + 0.2 + 0.6 = 1.2
Thus X = 6
Trio odds = 1.2 x 6 + 1 = 8.20


5.12 Bet Types: Swinger Bet

5.14 Bet Types: Pick Bets

Rules

Pick bets such as the Daily Double/V2, V4 and Pick bets in North and South America are win multiples, offered on selected races. The major difference however is that they are not settled on the basis of a multiple of the win odds of each single selection but base on their own dividend determined by the Totalisator. These bets are settled at Tote odds and rules, even when the betting stake is not in all cases forwarded into the Tote Pool.

Multiple bets may also be referred to as accumulation bets or accumulators.

When you are making a multiple bet, you will be attempting to correctly predict the outcome of more than one race in a single bookmaker bet.

For example, you might make a bet involving horses in the first three races of a meeting. If you made a multiple bet, this would be known as a treble bet (a double bet involves just two races). Your multiple bet would only be successful if all three horses won their races. Your winnings from the first fixture are used as your stake on the second race. The money won on the second fixture goes onto the third race.

In case of a win/place multiple, calculation of winnings will be performed on a bet type on bet type basis, which is, win on win and place on place.

This means that if you made a successful multiple win bet on three races, where the odds on your runner were 2.00 in each fixture, your winnings would be calculated as follows;
2.00 x 2.00 x 2.00 = 8.00
This means that you would be paid out at odds of 8.00.

Should a selection become a non-runner, this runner shall be settled as a winner at odds of 1.00. It results in your stake being assigned to the next selection in the multiple. This only applies in races where the Rule 4 is in place, or if the bet has been placed as a bookmaker bet. Otherwise it will be settled as a losing selection. The same applies in the event of race cancellation.

In certain countries, two or more runners can be coupled together, for betting purposes when they either have the same trainer or owner.

Italy, Turkey and PMU Markets

In these markets runners are coupled exclusively for win bets. Such coupled runners are marked in the race card with identical coloured numbers behind the runners' names. Relevant is however always the assignment in the official racing report.

Bets are still placed on a specific runner but if any of the coupled runners of your selection wins the race, your bet is winning as well.

If a coupled runner becomes a non-runner bets on that specific runner shall be refunded while bets on his coupled runners will remain valid.

Runners are not coupled for fixed-odds betting.

North and South America

In these markets runners are coupled for all bet types if they have the same owner. They then share the same start number, which can be suffixed with a letter.

Your bet is only voided and the stake money refunded, if all the coupled runners of your selection are becoming non-runners. In any other case your stake shall be distributed equally over the remaining coupled runners.

We might not display all runners coupled together in our race card but just one of them.
